Convenience Is Changing Party Retail

Nov. 02, 2026

A good celebration does not have to be expensive or perfectly planned. For many hosts, the bigger challenge is finding enough time, money and energy to bring people together.

That practical reality is becoming an important consideration for retailers selling party supplies and seasonal decorations. In its 2026 Holiday Trend Report, published on October 28, Walmart found that 42.4% of surveyed shoppers expected to host or attend three to four gatherings during the holiday season. Yet affordability and convenience remained major concerns: 40.7% wanted hosting to be more affordable, while 40.3% wanted cleanup to be easier.

The findings point to an interesting retail opportunity. Consumers may still want to celebrate, but they are looking for ways to make the preparation less demanding. For party-supply retailers, that means thinking beyond how products look and considering how they make an event easier to organize.

Celebrations Are Staying, but Expectations Are Changing

Hosting a gathering involves more than buying decorations. People need to plan food, prepare a space, coordinate with guests and clean up afterward. When several celebrations take place within the same season, the time and expense can add up.

Walmart's survey suggests that gatherings remain an important part of the holiday season. More than four in ten respondents expected to host or attend three to four events. At the same time, many wanted affordable ways to make those occasions happen.

This distinction matters. Value-conscious shoppers are not necessarily looking for the cheapest possible celebration. They may be willing to spend on products that make a gathering feel special, provided the purchase offers a clear benefit.

For retailers, the opportunity is to understand where customers want to spend and where they would rather save. A host might choose one visually distinctive decoration while keeping table settings simple. Another might prefer a coordinated, ready-to-use set that reduces planning time.

The purchasing decision is increasingly about the overall usefulness of the assortment, not just the price of an individual item.

Convenience Is Part of the Product

Party supplies are often presented as decorative items: banners, balloons, tableware, cake accessories and themed decorations. But shoppers also judge them by how much work they require.

A banner that is easy to hang, a decoration that needs little assembly, or a coordinated set that does not require customers to search for matching pieces can make preparation easier.

Cleanup is another part of the experience. In Walmart's survey, 40.3% of respondents said easier cleanup would make hosting more enjoyable. This does not mean every customer prefers disposable products or that reusable products are losing relevance. It shows that the effort involved after a gathering is worth considering alongside appearance and price.

For buyers, this creates a practical product-development question: can a product deliver the desired visual effect without adding unnecessary preparation or cleanup?

Packaging, assembly instructions, product combinations and ease of storage can all influence that experience. These details may not be the first things shoppers notice in a product photograph, but they can matter when the item is actually used.

Coordinated Assortments Can Reduce Shopping Effort

Another finding from Walmart's report is that 30.3% of surveyed shoppers said buying across multiple categories in one place would make shopping easier.

For party retailers, this is relevant to how products are organized and presented. Customers preparing for a birthday or holiday gathering may need decorations, tableware, cake accessories and small finishing touches. If these products are difficult to find or do not work well together, shoppers have to spend more time comparing options and completing their purchases.

A coordinated assortment can make that process simpler. This does not necessarily mean selling large, expensive party kits. It can be as straightforward as grouping products by occasion, colour palette or theme, or showing which items work well together.

The benefit is clarity. Customers can understand what they need, identify complementary products and make decisions with less effort.

Retailers should still avoid assuming that every shopper wants a complete package. Some prefer to buy individual pieces, while others value the convenience of a ready-made combination. Offering both options can serve different budgets and planning styles.

Value Is About More Than a Low Price

Price remains important. Walmart's report found that 70.2% of surveyed shoppers said lower prices would make holiday shopping easier. But competing only on price can be difficult, particularly in categories where many products look similar.

Retailers need to communicate what customers receive for the price. A coordinated set may save shopping time. A durable decoration may be suitable for more than one occasion. A simple product may be attractive because it requires little setup.

These benefits do not automatically justify a higher price. They need to be relevant to the customer and clear enough to influence the purchase.

For suppliers, this also affects how products should be developed and presented. Attractive design remains important, but buyers may also want practical information about pack contents, assembly, dimensions, storage and whether items can be combined with other products.

A product's commercial value is shaped by how well it fits into the customer's actual event-planning process.

What Retail Buyers Should Consider

The changing expectations around hosting create several useful questions for party-supply buyers.

First, does the assortment cover the main steps of preparing for an event, or does it offer only decorative pieces? Second, are products easy to combine without forcing customers to purchase a large bundle? Third, does the range include options at different price points? Finally, are the products straightforward to set up, use and store?

These questions can help buyers assess an assortment from the customer's point of view.

They also matter when planning inventory. A large selection of highly specific products may look attractive, but it can increase complexity and make it harder for shoppers to find what they need. A more focused range, organized around common occasions and practical uses, may be easier to manage and easier to shop.

Making Room for More Celebrations

Walmart's 2026 holiday findings offer a useful snapshot of how one major retailer's surveyed customers are thinking about seasonal gatherings. They do not establish a universal trend across every market or every type of celebration. However, they highlight a practical consideration that party retailers should not overlook: customers care about the work involved in hosting, not just the finished event.

For the party-supply industry, this creates room to rethink product value. Visual appeal still helps create the atmosphere, but convenience, coordinated choices and manageable spending can influence whether customers decide to buy.

The retailers best positioned to respond will not simply offer more decorations. They will make it easier for customers to choose the right products, prepare their spaces and enjoy the occasion.

Because the success of a celebration is not measured by how complicated it was to organize. It is measured by the moments people get to share.
